Portrait of Sir Winston Churchill, white gouache, pen and ink, signed in pencil by the artist, with a pencil quote from a Churchill’s last wartime speech handwritten by Hailstone above Churchill’s portrait:
“I should be unworthy of your confidence and generosity if I did not still cry: Forward, unflinching, unswerving, indomitable, till the whole task is done and the whole world is safe and clean –
Winston Churchill”
Closed tears to margins, some creasing,
Measures approx: 38 x 28 cm, 1942
Signature: B. Hailstone ’42 in pencil at base of artwork.
Interesting facts about the artist:
Bernard Hailstone later completed a colour portrait of Churchill, which hangs in the National Portrait Gallery, and is very similar to this one, which I suspect was used as a preliminary for the finished colour picture in the Gallery.
Hailstone’s major contribution to the Industry was as a war Artist of the highest caliber, hence chosen by Churchill to paint the national Portrait Gallery Picture. Hailstone later commented that Churchill was a very difficult sitter as he fidgeted and moved around a lot.
