Churchill Toby – Wilkinson’s Royal Staffordshire Pottery

Many say this is one of the finest Churchill Tobies produced.

Arthur J Wilkinson, Royal Staffordshire Pottery, Burslem, 1941. Measures 12″ high.
Number 257 of 350, signed by Clarice Cliff.

It is likely that Sir Francis Caruthers Gould did most of the work creating this Churchill toby jug. He  designed a superb series of World War I leaders for Wilkinson from 1915-17 and would have almost certainly included Churchill had he not resigned over the Dardanelles disaster.

I am confident that this toby was designed in 1915 but withheld;  then in 1941 Clarice Cliff modified it and made it available. The original issue price was five guineas, (£5.25)

This toby has had some damage and professional repair work to the base as can be seen in the  photographs but the main body is undamaged – hence the low price -.
