"One of the Largest Private Collections to Come on the Market"Anglo Saxon Review – Vol 1
Anglo Saxon Review
The Anglo Saxon Review published by Churchill’s mother, Lady Randolph Churchill, consists of 10 large volumes which ran from June 1899 – Sept. 1901.
Here we have Vol 1 only. Second Edition
London and New York, John Lane 1899
Top edges gilt, others uncut
Original publisher’s binding.
Original elaborately-decorated vari-colored morocco gilt.
Ornate leather binding, each of the 10 volumes is a facsimile of one of the world’s great bookbindings including a Samuel Mearne, a Derome, a binding for James I and a painted Italian binding
An opulent, expensive and frequently satirized periodical at the time.
Churchill contributed articles to two of the issues and supported his mother in this grand venture although he disagreed with her choice of the name “Anglo-Saxon Review”.
Unfortunately the leather used for the bindings was of poor quality and so they have not withstood 120 years as well as other books. The photos show the fragility of the binding of Vol 1 listed here for sale.
Contents are Fine. Strong, clean, no foxing.
